Lent Event 2019
Lent Event is 40 days of simple living and inspiration from people building God’s Kingdom.
Join people all over Australia who are giving up something from daily life and saving what they’d otherwise have spent, donating and fundraising for projects that end poverty and build hope.
Our focus in 2019 is water and sanitation, leadership and child protection in Timor Leste, with excess funds used for our projects globally.
Lent Event is UnitingWorld’s call to individuals and churches to be personally changed by God’s work in the world, by meeting people across the Pacific, Asia and Africa who are building peace, creating justice, offering hope and bringing new life.
THIS YEAR’S PROJECTS
Timor Leste is the poorest nation in Southeast Asia. After decades of occupation and the struggle for independence, tuberculosis is the leading cause of death with diarrhoea not far behind. The country also has one of the highest rates in the world of malnutrition among children. There’s a huge need for health education, especially around water and sanitation. Two health clinics in remote areas provide health and nutrition education to some of Timor Leste’s most isolated families. They teach about basic hygiene, the importance of clean water and toilets, and provide support for healthy food. This reduces malnutrition and disease and promotes healthy living.
With very high levels of violence against children widely reported, the Church has identified leadership training in child protection as their most urgent need. We’re helping the church develop child protection policies and immediately implement them in schools and communities, standing up to sexual violence in a culture which often protects perpetrators due to shame.
So during Lent, live simply and support people working hard to escape poverty.
- Give up something such as coffee/tea, single use plastic, junk food or driving your car OR
- take up something e.g. a daily act of kindness, a physical challenge
And then donate what you save to Lent Event projects.
